When Kojo was king of the castle

NICKNAMED the Fresh Prince of Hackney, Kojo is a rising star on the comedy circuit, and now he is fronting a new live show in Shepherd's Bush, writes Kate Ferguson.

He hosted the LOL All USA Star Special, at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire last Sunday, featuring a host of comedy greats from across the pond, including Tony Roberts, Wil Sylvince and Slim.

While Kojo stands out in this billing as the only English name, it is perhaps not surprising organisers have picked him to host the night.

Since first trying his hand at comedy at a workshop in 2000, when he was 19, Kojo has spent a lot of time travelling to the States and working with some of the country's most successful comedians, including Chris Rock and Dave Chapelle.

Kojo credits his experiences on stage in America with developing his style, and his writing, and turning him into the world renowned act he is today.

He said: "I lived in New York for nine months and I was working with Russell Simmins and Chris Rock. When you are around people like that you can't help to learn. I developed my writing a fantastic amount when I was over there."

Never the funny guy at school, kojo says his comedic style is rooted in his quick wit and comebacks. I soon see what he means. When I ask him to describe his style Kojo responds instantly: "observational, adventurous and honest."

He adds: "I am not really influenced by anyone but by life itself. I live life to the max so I can talk about it. I draw from my own experiences."

But despite his time in America, Kojo says his love of London hasn't weakened, and he is excited about performing to a home crowd.

"London makes you step up your game and write more. It is going to be a great show, the LOL people put out quality shows, they are great."
